Why ‘Environmental Issues’?

“The environment is everything that isn’t me.” (Einstein) Or are we part of it, inextricably bound up with its past and future? What does this mean for the way we live?

How do the way we live and the decisions we make impact on our environment? Are we to blame for global warming, poverty and pollution? And if so, what are we going to do about it? Explore questions of sustainability, risk and management as they relate to the world in which we live? Are we the custodians of its future or the architect of its demise?

Make the most of your discovery modules

Remember, you should be aiming to to put together a good, coherent set of discovery modules, based on what you're most interested in. Here is a reminder of our two suggested approaches:

  1. Choose a range of modules that build up your knowledge around a particular theme. These might be all from one academic discipline, or they might offer different disciplinary perspectives on the same topics.
  2. Choose an academic discipline (eg law, ethics, sociology, theology, history) and choose a set of modules which will enable you progressively to deepen your skills in that discipline.

Once you have identified some possible modules to take, look at which school or subject-area is providing them. This will help you understand what perspective on the subject they will take, and what methods they will be using. This is important in helping you to understand what you should (and should not) expect from particular modules. For example:

  • The main provider of modules on ethical issues related to the environment is the School of Earth and Environment, along with other schools within the Faculty of Environment (Geography, Transport Studies)
  • Look out for more philosophical approaches to environmental ethics from Inter-Disciplinary Ethics, and Philosophy, Religion and the History of Science or more political and policy-related approaches from Politics and International Studies or Sociology and Social Policy.
  • There may be other disciplinary approaches besides these.
  • The first 4 characters of the module code tell you which subject area provides the module.
